Evaluating mitigation strategies for urban heat island in Mandaue City using ENVI-met

چکیده
Mandaue is a crucial city in Cebu island, Philippines as it links other large metropolises and highly industrialized. The occurrence of urban heat island (UHI) was already confirmed by previous study. In this paper, we aim to determine how UHI could be improved mitigations including increasing vegetation, adding open spaces, employing green roofs and/or combination thereof. ENVI-met software utilized simulate two study sites: M. C. Briones street the planned development (PUD). To reduce computing load, further divided into 2 subareas PUD 4 subareas. Results simulation indicate that addition more spaces trees decrease air temperature 0.2 °C on average while roof an range °C–0.4 °C. When trees, grasses used, decreased 0.1 °C–0.3 Despite these mitigations, thermal comfort index would still greater than 26 which means majority people feel uncomfortable. On hand, surface 0.5 °C–0.8 conversion building have no effect. vegetation employed, 0.4 °C–1.1

High temperature in the city centers than its’ surroundings known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, which is causing discomfort to the urban dwellers in the summer time is gaining much attention around the world because the world is getting urbanized as it advances in technology. Alterations of surface area, improper urban planning, air pollution, etc. are causing this increasingly growing...
متن کاملThe effectiveness of cool and green roofs as urban heat island mitigation strategies
Mitigation of the urban heat island (UHI) effect at the city-scale is investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in conjunction with the Princeton Urban Canopy Model (PUCM). Specifically, the cooling impacts of green roof and cool (white/highalbedo) roof strategies over the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area during a heat wave period (7 June–10 June 2008) are assess...
متن کاملThe urban heat island Mitigation Impact Screening Tool (MIST)
A web-based screening tool has been developed to assist urban planners and air quality management officials in assessing the potential of urban heat island mitigation strategies to affect the urban climate, ozone air quality, and energy consumption within their cities. The user of the screening tool can select from any of over 200 US cities for which to conduct the analysis. The mitigation stra...
متن کاملModeling effects of urban heat island mitigation strategies on heat-related morbidity: a case study for Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
A zero-dimensional energy balance model was previously developed to serve as a user-friendly mitigation tool for practitioners seeking to study the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Accordingly, this established model is applied here to show the relative effects of four common mitigation strategies: increasing the overall (1) emissivity, (2) percentage of vegetated area, (3) thermal conductivity,...
متن کاملUrban Heat Island
We are all familiar with the fact that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. We see it referenced most nights in our television weather reports. It is especially significant on nights with clear skies and light winds which favor radiational cooling. This is most significant in the rural areas but in the city, the excess heat absorbed during the day and the local he...
